This book introduces the print series "Taiheiki eiyu den" designed by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), a leading figure in heroic tales in Japanese prints. "This set is dedicated to the last years of the civil war of the 16th century and to Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98), an important figure of the time. All 50 prints in this set are reproduced in full color. Each print includes a translation of the vast text incorporated into the composition and detailed historical and cultural commentary. The introductory essay examines the uniqueness of Kuniyoshi's warrior images, explores the roots of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's popularity, and discusses the texts written on the prints as a source of information on the late medieval samurai view and battlefield practices.
